"What's Going On At The ATC?"
September, 2007

Hello everyone,

There have been many exciting things happening at the MCATC over the past few weeks.  Last Friday, the Secretary of Education provided the community with a check for $374,000 that will be used to purchase equipment for the industrial maintenance classroom at the MCATC.  The equipment will be used for the high school robotics classes and for adult and industry training.

The school has added two additional staff members.  They are Christie Glasscock who is teaching health sciences and Mary Lancaster who is serving as the school’s career advisor.  Both are a great addition to the school!  They are student focused and have worked hard to provide more opportunities for our students.

MCATC Student of the Month

Ms. Lancaster has organized our Student of the Month program.  The activity is organized to recognize 1 outstanding student in each program area.  Once an industry agrees to sponsorship they donate $150 which is used to purchase t-shirts for students and pay for recognition activities for the students.  At the end of the year, a $500 scholarship will go to a graduating senior who has been student of the month for the 2007-2008 school year.   We received an outstanding response from our request for sponsors.  This year’s sponsors include:  Akebono, Angell-Demmel, Hendrickson Truck Suspension Systems, Marion Adjustment Center, Marion County Fiscal Court, Montebello Packaging, Plastic Products Co., Inc., Spring View Hospital, Summa Technology, TG Kentucky, and Toyotomi America Corporation.  A special thanks to the Marion County Fiscal Court for donating an additional $450 to the program.  Some of the extra funding provided by the fiscal court will also go toward the National Technical Honor Society.

Congratulations to the following students for being recognized as the August Students of the Month.  The students will travel to Toyotomi on September 14, 2007 for a tour and lunch.

Listed below are activities that have taken place throughout some of our program areas.

Welding, Machine Tool Technology, and CAD/CAM

Mr. McDaniels and his students are fabricating a large gate that will be placed at Centre Square in downtown Lebanon.  The gate will be a nice addition to the area.  Mr. Spalding’s CAD class provided the Centre Square committee with different designs for the gate.  Once the type of gate was selected, the welding classes estimated the materials needed for the project, ordered the materials, measured and cut the steel, and welded the pieces together to make the design.  Mr. Sublett in Machine Tool Technology and Mr. Spalding’s classes will cut and design metal letters that will be placed in the center of the gate that read “Centre Square.”  The gate will hopefully be in place by Ham Days.

 Construction Technology

Mr. Taylor’s introduction to carpentry classes have been learning how to use various power tools. While learning how to use a jigsaw, students cut out large wooden signs that will be used by the Chamber of Commerce during Ham Days.

 Industry

A special thanks to Dawna Kelch with Angell-Demmel and the Lebanon/Marion County Chamber of Commerce for providing 5S training for 11 area technology principals from all over the state.  Dawna did a quick version of the process to help expose principals to the philosophy.

Adult and industry courses are currently being offered in Auto CAD, Microsoft Excel, and Welding. Other classes will be coming soon!

Throughout the school year, I will be providing you more information about the great things taking place at the MCATC!
